Achievements and Highlights at the Second Stage of the Sprout Project
in 2021

 

  Through developing an innovative teaching model, the higher education sprout project “MU ENRICH” of Meiho University in 2021 enhanced students’ practical competency, creativity, and employability, reinforced its guidance for financially and culturally vulnerable students and developed the characteristics of the university. The objectives were to approach the communities and provide local service. The Higher Education Sprout team, according to the spirit of SDGs, planned the activities on campus. With the call of the Higher Education Sprout team, by curriculum design, club activities on campus, and multiple social services, the teachers and students of the university actively implemented the goal in order to protect the Earth, promote social harmony and prosperity and catch up with the world. Thus, Meiho University moved forward to the vision of sustainable development. 
Accomplishment and highlights of objectives in 2021 are shown below: 
 [Implementation of teaching innovation and upgrading of teaching quality] 
  Implementation of professional practical skill training: In the academic year of 2021, it established a nursing clinical training course with Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital and selected 35 students of the nursing department to participate in the training. The students obtained the fellowship of internship NTD 60,000. Besides, after the internship, they continued working in Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital Pingtung Branch. In 2021, it implemented industry-academia cooperation with internship organizations in Kaohsiung and Pingtung and introduced 27 students to Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Pingtung Christian Hospital, Paochien Hospital, and Antai Tian-Sheng Memorial Hospital. The students obtained monthly grants of NTD 10,000. It allowed students to focus on study and internship and obtain local employment. Remarkable acceptance rate in Taiwan: The acceptance rate of professional nurse license of higher examination was 84.7%, 8 students were in the ranking of top 100 (2 of them were indigenous students). Cultivation of foreign language competency in the workplace: In “2021 Competition of Professional English and Japanese Vocabulary and Listening Competency: Competition of southern area”, there were one champion, 2 second place and 3 third place of JVQC Japanese word group, the second place and Golden Brain Award of PVQC tourism English group, the second place of PVQC hospitality English group, and Golden Brain Award of PVQC medical and nursing group. Flipped traditional instruction of e-teaching materials: It launched teaching units to produce e-teaching materials and 66 videos were created to activate teaching and learning; Master’s guidance of talent training: It held serial master lectures and published Meiho Vision to expand the vision of teachers and students and create the new prospect of life. Quality control of teaching: It constructed a “teaching quality control and career guidance system”, reinforced teaching quality control PDCA and showed the feedback to teaching content and curriculum planning to complete the blueprint of talent cultivation. 
 [Development of school characteristics] 
  Elderly empowerment in Meiho University: It cultivated long-term care talents, provided strength training for the elderly of the community, implemented holistic integrated evaluation and health promotion, held social care learning activities and promoted elderly tourism. 4 sessions of elderly empowerment and elderly workshops were planned, and 7 sessions were executed and the percentage was 175%. Food safety in Pingtung: It implemented a local industrial upgrading plan, provided food industry technique guidance, upgraded product value and increased industry-academia cooperation. 9 sessions of guidance of local food companies were planned and 11 sessions were executed. The percentage was 122%. 3 sessions of food safety forums, experience in ingredients, food, and agriculture education, and nutrition of my plates were planned and 11 sessions were executed. The percentage was 366%. From Taiwan to the world: It reinforced the teachers and students’ international mobility, and 2 sessions of the second language course were executed with the percentage of 100%. 3 sessions of “teaching materials and methods” based teaching training workshops and lectures and 1 case of life Taiwanese teaching material with local features were executed with the percentage of 100%. 4 sessions of daily Taiwanese Hokkien learning activities based on the experience of Taiwanese culture and local features were executed with the percentage of 100%. 
 [Upgrading of commonality of higher education] 
Economy and academic assistance: According to survey results in 2021, 65.8% of students did not work with a part-time job out of the university and 41.9% of living expenses were derived from families. After participating in the Tesla project, students showed a 98.5% of presence rate in class and 76.7% of students increased weekly learning hours by at least 10 hours. One-stop service for indigenous students: It provided a one-stop service for indigenous students’ academic and living guidance and implemented tribal culture learning. Active recruitment of teachers: In the first semester of the academic year of 2021, 4 new teachers were recruited and 26 teachers obtained flexible wages. Public information of school affairs: 100% accomplishment of public items required by Ministry of Education. Holistic person: reconstruction of five ways of life “moral, intellectual, physical, social, and aesthetic education”: By curricular and extracurricular experiences, it enhances students’ multiple dimensions of growth. 
 [Fulfillment of social responsibility] 
  Local revitalization assisted by precise fermentation technology: It explored the fermentation of cocoa beans, guided the companies to enhance product quality and cooperated with the communities to revitalize Silin Cocoa Hub. Organic biology prevention: It fought for competitive industry-academia cooperation projects and promoted the reduction of insecticides on campus and in rural villages. Industrial value-added of groupers of Fangliao: By industry-academia cooperation, it developed traceable Kabayaki grouper, giant grouper meatballs, and Collagen powder. Serial products were in the third place of souvenir of marine product in Pingtung. Reinforcement of Areola Babylon cultural industrial chain: It successfully incubated Areola Babylon and planned a digital cluster. Youth-elderly holistic care for the seniors: It trained 41 educators of oral health and 40 promoters of adult picture books and enhanced teachers and students’ elderly care competency. Sustainable Hakka culture: By lectures, filmmaking, and Hakka learning, it participated in 300 years of Liudui 300. Linyuan healing and narration: It provided gardening therapy for the community elderly and was the winner of the national project competition. 
Cultivation of professional talents, development of local culture, and connection with the world are the persistent objectives of the practice of Meiho University.
